So the best actor Oscar nominations are:

Richard Jenkins, “The Visitor”

Frank Langella, “Frost/Nixon”

Sean Penn, “Milk”

Brad Pitt, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”

Mickey Rourke, “The Wrestler”

So the best actor Oscar is really between Rourke for The Wrestler and Penn for Milk. No disrespect to Frank Langella who I ‘ve heard gives a brilliant and imaginative interpretation of Nixon. Or the others: Richard Jenkins is a fine actor and has long-deserved to get recognition. Brad Pitt? Fine actor too but the film does look rather silly and whimsical let’s be honest. IAltough I admit I have yet to see it.

So it’s Rourke versus Penn and having seen both it’s a tough call but I really think that Penn should get it. His performance was, I believe a lot harder to achieve based as it is on a real-life person. He also has to fight criticism that he was straight and present himself as a believable three-dimensional gay man. And he certainly achieved this, he was able to perfectly synthesise the mannerisms of   a gay man without seeming just camp. He also brought an anger and passion to the role that really showed a sense of long-held repression and frustration that milk must’ve felt. And ultimately he made Milk human not an aloof  saint but a guy woth problems and frailties that went with his political motivations.

But for my money it’s still gotta be Penn re-defining bravura and setting the standard for interpretations of historical figures.
